Onyx

 Onyx is in the chalcedony family and comes in a wide range of colors. Some onyx is evenly colored while some is banded. Onyx is easily dyed, so beware of the more unnatural looking colors, such as bright blue, etc. Onyx with red or black and white bands is sometimes referred to as "Sardonyx". Carnelian is sometimes considered as Sardonyx, but this generally applies to the orange variety. The type called flint is grey, smoky-brown, or brown-black.  A type of onyx called “Chert” (similar to Flint) is grey to black. 

Hardness: 6.5-7.0.

Mystical/Emotional:

v  Eliminates negative thinking, and sharpen the wits of the wearer.

v  Yellow or "honey" onyx is said to help in knowing when to keep silent.

Physical Healing : Used as a heart, kidney, nerve, capillary, hair, eye and nail strengthener. Said to help with insomnia, chemical imbalances, circulatory problems, allergy reactions, and decrease fatty deposits.  Encourages determination and resolve to act in a health conscious way.  Yellow onyx is said to benefit lung problems. Like a thick blanket that soothes and warms.

Black Onyx (Chert, Flint)

  • Draws all the color rays, is used to help one change habits.
  • Associated with regeneration and new beginnings.
  • Protective qualities, making it advantageous to carry when one is traveling.
  • Useful in fighting basic fears and in helping create the opportunity to move beyond bad relationships--and to heal old emotional wounds.
  • The Romans associated it with courage and it is thought to be useful when one is defending  in defending and protecting during any battle or conflict, as well as provide protection from psychic attack.
  • Helps with compulsive, self-defeating habits (especially when used with Snowflake Obsidian).  Shifts may take place that will take the “fun” out of bad habits.
  • Helpful for focusing.  Learn from the past and intuitively sense danger.  Teaches restraint and clear thinking, empathy.
  • Useful for victims of abuse and trauma.  Helps us assimilate change.
